It is the treatment of choice for severe sleep apnea. By delivering pressure, nocturnal positive airway pressure (CPAP) prevents closure of the upper airways during sleep.
The pressure comes from a generator delivering a pressure that usually varies from 4 to 18 cm of water (pneumatic splint).
This treatment requires :
- a pressure generator whose pressure is usually variable according to apnea detection (automatic CPAP) and connected to the mains supply
- A watertight nasal mask secured by straps and connected to the generator by a hose
Various models are available (fixed or variable pressure, humidifier, heated air, variable inspiratory and expiratory pressure...).
This treatment is totally effective in the vast majority of cases, but it has two disadvantages:
- Psychological, especially in young people, with few symptoms (fatigue and drowsiness).
- Recurrence of apnea after discontinuation of treatment
