Turbinoplasty:
It is performed under local anesthesia or light ambulatory sedation. It consists of reducing the volume of the inferior turbinates using radiofrequency or laser. Healing is achieved within a few weeks. It is indicated in cases of excess volume of these structures, resulting in nasal obstruction that is both intermittent and positional (nasal obstruction when lying down). This procedure does not require nasal packing and does not cause postoperative pain.
Septoplasty:
It is performed under general anesthesia with either a 24-hour hospital stay or on an outpatient basis (without an overnight hospital stay). It consists of surgically straightening a deviated midline nasal septum. It is indicated in cases of significant deviation, resulting in nasal obstruction that is often unilateral or predominantly on the same side. This procedure does not alter the appearance of the nose and does not cause postoperative swelling or bruising. There is no postoperative pain, but some discomfort may occur due to the presence of nasal packing for 24 hours and splints against the septum for one week.
In the context of the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, nasal decongestion is indicated if the respiratory discomfort is significant and systematically brings about an improvement in daytime and nighttime breathing and therefore in the quality of sleep.
