Fractures of the mandible require appropriate treatment to avoid potentially severe complications.
Fractures of the dentate portion of the mandible fractures are complex, the dental arches may need to be fused together, either with screws placed in each gum or with wires ligated to each tooth. These screws or wires are then connected by metal wires or elastics, which prevent or limit mouth opening. Fractures of the ascending rami and joints may sometimes require an incision behind the angle of the mandible. If these fractures are not displaced, they are more often treated with fixation, the duration of which will vary depending on the type of fracture (between 10 and 30 days).
In the event of an open fracture in the mouth, surgical treatment must be carried out within 48 hours to avoid the risk of infection.
